The Season of Seedheads and Dried Flowers

Firth Flock Flowers – September 2026

Flower farmer and florist workshop at Firth Flock Flowers in North Wales, with dried flowers hanging from the rafters and fresh autumn flowers being prepared for delivery in compostable paper with compostable hydration packs.

September always feels like a month caught between seasons.

The dahlias are still flowering their hearts out, wedding season is quietly winding down, and the barn is filling with bunches of flowers hanging from the rafters to dry. Seed heads are being gathered, wreath materials are slowly piling up, and we're keeping one nervous eye on the forecast as the first frosts creep ever closer.

It's one of my favourite times of year. A little bittersweet perhaps, but full of colour, texture and the promise of what's to come.

Fresh Flowers, Dried Flowers & Christmas Planning

Before I get too sentimental about frosts and fading flower fields, a quick update from the website.

We've given the online shop a bit of a refresh and all of our autumn products are now available to browse. Alongside our final fresh flower bouquets of the season, you'll also find a beautiful selection of dried flower arrangements made using flowers grown and dried here on the farm throughout the summer.

And for those of you who are wonderfully organised (or simply enjoy feeling smug in December), Christmas pre-orders are now live too.

Whether you're looking for festive gifts, seasonal arrangements or simply want to get ahead before the Christmas rush, everything can now be found on the website.

The dried flowers are one of my favourite parts of this time of year. Throughout the summer we've been hanging bunches in the rafters of the barn, watching colours deepen and textures develop, and it's lovely finally being able to share them.

Last Chance for British-Grown Flowers

Fresh seasonal flowers grown on our sustainable flower farm in North Wales, being prepared for flower subscription orders and carefully packaged for delivery via Royal Mail.

If you've been thinking about ordering flowers this year, now really is the time. Our flowers are grown right here in North Wales, picked fresh from the field, free from chemical sprays, and haven't travelled halfway across the world before sitting in a bucket by a supermarket checkout. They're seasonal, they're local, and they represent the very best of what British flower growers can produce.

Every bouquet purchased over the next few weeks genuinely matters. It's the final chapter of this growing season, and every order supports a small flower farm preparing to make it through the winter months before we start again next spring.

Once the frost comes, that's it.

The field gets a well-earned rest, and we'll be waiting patiently for spring all over again.

A Wonderful Evening at The Dreamatorium

Earlier this month we hosted our Meadow Box Workshop at The Dreamatorium in Ruthin.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us.

If you haven't visited before, The Dreamatorium really is one of Ruthin's hidden gems. The workshop space is bright, spacious and beautiful, the team are endlessly helpful, and the shop itself is an absolute Aladdin's cave of treasures. Participants spent their break exploring the shelves and discovering all sorts of wonderful things.

We're incredibly lucky to work with such fantastic local businesses and we are looking forward to many more collaborations with Lavinia Stamps and The Dreamatorium team.

Behind the Scenes at Lima Gardens

Photoshoot at Lima Gardens Wales featuring stunning autumn wedding flowers grown organically in North Wales

We've also spent some time this month in the beautiful surroundings at Lima Gardens. Many of you will already know that we've been working with Jenny for a while now, collaborating on weddings and purchasing specialist flowers from Lima for our own wedding work.

This month we joined forces with Alex Morgan Photography for a photoshoot in the gardens to create some much-needed new images for our autumn products and website. After looking through our existing autumn bouquet photographs, we decided they could benefit from some professional attention.

It was my dream kind of day, spending time with Jenny, playing with flowers purely for the joy of it, and seeing our creations photographed against the backdrop of those stunning gardens.

We're excited to see the final images and will be sharing them on social media as soon as they're ready.

Two New Workshops for 2027

One of the things we're most excited to announce is that we're officially launching two brand-new workshops with Lima Gardens next year.

Make Your Own Wedding Flowers

Planning your wedding and wondering if you could create your own flowers? This workshop is designed for couples and friends to learn floristry in a relaxed setting.

So... Is It Too Early To Mention Christmas?

Apparently this is a controversial subject. Every year social media fills up with debates about when Christmas becomes acceptable conversation. September? October? Definitely not before Halloween?

I can honestly say I'd rather not talk about Christmas, but I'm firmly in the camp of getting it sorted sooner rather than later.

The truth is that Christmas wreath workshops are an important part of businesses like ours. While the flower field rests for winter, workshops help bridge the gap until the growing season returns.

And despite doing this for years, launching them still feels slightly terrifying.

Last year every workshop sold out before the end of November. This year? Who knows.

Every season feels different, and there's always that little voice wondering whether anyone will actually book. Especially when it seems every village hall, café, pub, garden centre, and enthusiastic Labrador is hosting a wreath workshop.

So why choose ours?

Because this is what we do.

Many of the dried flowers you'll use were growing in our field just months ago. They've spent the season hanging from our rafters, drying naturally and waiting for their festive moment.

No plastic decorations. No mass-produced kits. Just beautiful seasonal materials, expert guidance, and a wreath that will look wonderful long after Christmas Day.

Christmas Workshops Are Now Live

Bookings are now open for our Christmas wreath workshops in Ruthin, Denbigh and Betws-y-Coed, with more dates to follow soon.

Spaces are limited and workshops sell out every year.

Before the Frost Arrives...

For now though, we're squeezing every last flower out of the field.

The dahlias are still blooming, the flowers are still beautiful, and there is still time to enjoy genuinely seasonal British-grown flowers before winter takes over.

If you've been thinking about treating yourself, sending flowers to someone special, or supporting a local flower farmer before the season ends, this is your moment.

Soon the dahlias will collapse, the annuals will finally give in, and we'll begin the process of putting the field to bed for winter.

Once they're gone, they're gone until spring.

Until then, we're making the most of every single stem.

Thank you, as always, for supporting local flowers, local food, local workshops and small businesses like ours.

With muddy hands and hopeful hearts,

Ellen x
