New Life, New Blooms

From bouquets to bottle-feeding, February at Firth Flock Flowers was a true multitasking masterclass! We swung from the romance of Valentine's Day, and our first wedding, to the heartwarming (and demanding) care of five pet lambs. Spring's first blooms are peeking through, vying for attention as lambing season kicks into gear. We're very close to launching our flower subscription service, and with Mother's Day there is no better time to send a monthly gift to those you love the most.

We hope you enjoy our February updates, and we have a special request regarding Valentine's Day below!

Valentine's Day: A Red Rose Riddle & Your Input Needed!

Valentine's Day was a whirlwind of activity, squeezed between the first wedding of the year and bottle-feeding our pet lambs! We showcased our stunning double Smith and Munson tulips, sharing the beauty of seasonal British blooms, and the wonderful variety we have on offer. However, the demand for classic red roses (which are not in season in the UK) was overwhelming. We're confident our customers prefer locally grown, pesticide-free flowers, and we're committed to providing them. However, it appears we still have work to do in spreading awareness about the advantages of sustainable, British blooms, especially for occasions like Valentine's Day.

*We're at a crossroads and need your help!

Should we rethink our Valentine's Day approach? Do we try something new, or is it a lost cause? We'd love to hear your thoughts! Please send us an email to jo.firthflockflowers@icloud.com or on Facebook and Instragram @firthflockflowers and let us know your ideas.

Funeral Flowers: Personal Tributes

Our new funeral flower flyers are back from the printers! We believe in creating truly personal tributes, reflecting the unique lives of those we've lost. I adore using flowers and even vegetables from people's own gardens to craft arrangements that resonate deeply.

One of my favourite arrangements included flowers from the garden of a loved one who had passed, alongside flowers from our field to create a truly personal and meaningful tribute. This photo of an arrangement in some old working boots captures the essence of a life well-lived (With our trusty Willow standing guard at the gate) Photo Credit: The talented Alex Morgan, a local photographer.

Lambing Season: A Delicate Balance of Care

We've welcomed 5 triplet lambs from another Black Welsh Mountain breeder! Meet Harriet (Harri), Harvest, Heather, Tim & Twm. Sheep naturally raise only two lambs due to having two teats, so we're bottle-feeding to ensure all three thrive. It's a demanding task, with feedings five times a day, but seeing them grow is incredibly rewarding.

Balancing lambing season with running a flower farm is a high-wire juggling act! Lambing is unpredictable, so I try to keep my diary flexible. Thankfully, barn cameras allow me to keep an eye on things, and with Wi-Fi in the barn, I often work from there. I've even delivered lambs while on a video call in the past! During lambing my response time may be longer than usual so please bare with me.

Wedding Season Begins: Living Plants and Colourful Celebrations

Our first 2025 wedding came in February marking a colourful start to the season! We used living plants for table decorations, which guests could replant and enjoy for years to come. Bulb jars were another hit, allowing guests to take a piece of spring home.

Living plants are a fantastic, eco-friendly choice for wedding decor. They offer lasting beauty and can be enjoyed long after the celebration.

On the Flower Field: Spring Preparations

The flower field is buzzing with activity, from building new beds, renewing pathways, to planting hardy annuals like larkspur, cornflowers, and statice as weather permits.

"Don't forget to mulch your borders and start sowing your own

hardy and half-hardy annuals!"
